Dr. ZHOU ZhiYing, Steven is Director of the Interactive Multimedia Lab, National University of Singapore. He is Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Interactive Digital Media Institute, NUS.
He has previously worked in Mixed Reality, Tangible User Interfaces, and Multimodal Human Computer Interactions in Mixed Reality Lab (Singapore) and NUS Hollywood Lab (Los Angeles, USA). He has been working on research covering mixed reality, human-computer interaction, computer vision and multi-modal systems. He has successfully obtained funding for externally funded projects in the area of tangible interface and mixed reality from ASTAR, MDA, IE Singapore, and Singapore Science Center. The research output has included numerous high quality academic journal papers and international patents. Research prototype deliverables numerous demonstrations including to the President and Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, Minister of MICA, Hollywood prestigious movie directors George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, broadcast television worldwide broadcasts on his research (such as CNN and CNBC), and international invited new media exhibits such as in i-Explore and i-Tokyo. His work has been selected to demonstrate at the lobby of the world’s No. 1 School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California.
He is currently an Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore where he leads a team of over 10 researchers and students with over S$1.4 M grants. He has been an invited speaker at international and local conferences and events. He was invited to show the works "wIzQubes" at numerous events and exhibitions including the permanent exhibition at Singapore Science Center. He was IEEE Singapore Section founder member, Co-editor/advisor/reviewer of ACM Computers in Entertainment (CIE), and elected to be the “Life-time fellow” of Education at the World Technology Network in 2004.
Apart from the academic achievements, Dr. Zhou is also a technopreneur. Dr. Zhou is the founder and director of MXR Corporation Pte. Ltd. The company was founded based on 3 US patents develop by Dr. Zhou at NUS, with the investment from NUS Holdings and international Venture Capital. The company has secured over S$1.6 M investment/grants, with subsidiary/branch in China and USA. Dr. Zhou has strong experience in the commercialization of lab technologies. For example, the software that he developed 10 years ago has been sold to more than 100 universities and high schools in China. He has led many projects and received a series of highly prestigious prizes, awards, and publications for his innovative work in Mixed Reality. He is the key person in leading the commercialization of the world's 1st mixed reality children's educational product – wIzQubesTM, which has been marketed internationally. He was featured by CNA and the Executive Magazine in 2007. |
